It’s that time of the year again: school is almost out, PCS orders have been cut, TMO appointments have been set, TAP classes are revving up, and transition is the word of the day.
The DoD has entirely revamped the Transition Assistance Program since I left active duty. Not only is it more standardized, but it is also more useful, including track-specific opportunities covering entrepreneurship, education, and employment. However, it never hurts to get a little bit more advice. So, this week, I’m going to cover a few places where those making the leap from servicemember to veteran can get a little more transition help. I’m going to start with High Speed Low Drag.
High Speed Low Drag was created by former Army Captain John Lee Dumas and former Marine Corps Captain Antonio Centeno. Both veterans successfully transitioned out of the military and into the civilian world –Dumas is the brains behind Entrepreneur On Fire, which provides podcast interviews with successful entrepreneurs 7-days a week, while Centeno went into the field of men’s fashion, studying fashion around the world and starting two fashion-related businesses, A Tailored Suit, which provides custom clothing, and Real Men Real Style, which provides style advice. On High Speed Low Drag, Dumas and Centeno relay important information they learned during their own transition to help transitioning vets, and those think about getting out, be better prepared for life after the military.
You can sign up for free for their “7-week Transition Course,” which will provide you with a weekly e-mailed newsletter with steps to consider when planning your transition. Each week you’ll get a bit of advice about a specific area of transition and a recommended homework assignment designed to help you solidify your plans. At the end, you’ll get a wrap-up reminder of all the steps and suggestions you’ve received. All the info is imparted in a to-the-point, but friendly manner that is helpful without being overwhelming. A few of the items, particularly on networks and veteran weaknesses, I found very good and wish someone would have said to me before I gave my last salute.
There are a few other articles on their webpage that are helpful and they share useful articles from other sources on their Facebook page.
Update (8/28/2014): Just finished a webinar offered by these guys and came away with some good info and an even better understanding of who John Lee Dumas, Antonio Centeno, and Tom Morkes are and how passionate they are about helping other vets succeed. Their High Speed Elite course is now ready – spaces are limited and it’s pricey but, if you’re interested in starting or growing a business, it’s going to offer some really great information and opportunities. You can check it out and/or sign up for the course here. They have also started doing podcasts twice a week – you can find those on iTunes or follow the link on their homepage. Also, they just sent a fantastic transition checklist to their distro list. You can find it here and, if you haven’t already, go ahead and sign up for their e-mails, all of which are full of useful tidbits.
